Horizon Communications — Wireless Internet For The Caribbean Region

Horizon Communications is a new wireless internet company that will be starting operations in Bermuda first, and expanding to more of the Caribbean region. They are going to offer services using wireless LTE technology to deliver upwards of 150 mbps internet speeds, VOIP telephone offerings, and high definition TV services. The goal is to provide access to great services to customers who are currently using overpriced and poor quality services.

Horizon estimates that coverage of their services will include ninety five percent of homes on Bermuda by minimal usage of towers. Coverage offshore may be up to fifteen miles offshore. The marketing plan within four or five years is to obtain at least fifteen percent of the market in Bermuda. The goal is to generate total revenues of about forty four million in five years with expenses of around twenty six million.

Horizon will have exclusive rights for the use of its technology in the region. By using more efficient technology, they will be able to provide lower pricing and be more competitive in the market. Horizon uses what is called fixed wireless technology. Fixed means that access is provided using radio waves to a single location. This means that there is no need for expensive phone lines and cables to be installed. Homes using the service will have an antenna installed on the exterior of the home. The 4G LTE equipment that Horizon uses will be able to provide speeds up to 300 Mbps. They want to build the most reliable network possible.

Horizon will also be utilizing blockchain technology in a few different ways. They are going to have their own Ethereum based token called the Horizon token, symbol HRZN. People who hold tokens are eligible for discounts on services. They also plan to share dividends with token holders and hold a token buyback program with a portion of their profits. The targeted amount for dividend sharing is fifteen percent, and about five percent is targeted for the buyback program.

Customers will be able to make payments for services by using the HRZN token. Employees can also be paid using tokens. The token is planned to be available for trading on different exchanges as well. Blockchain will also be used by Horizon to offer data storage with integrated blockchain technology. Customer portals will have access to encrypted decentralized storage. The Horizon company also plans to offer VPN, or virtual private network services, using blockchain solutions as well.

There is great opportunity for improving the wireless network offerings in the Caribbean region and especially Bermuda. Current offerings in these regions can be very slow and unreliable. Much of the competition can only offer speeds of ten Mbps. Fast and reliable internet has become essential for many people and businesses. Tourism and cruise ships provide additional opportunity for wireless internet providers. In 2016, over six hundred thousand tourists visited Bermuda.
